Pigmentation & Tanning: Why Bangalore's Weather Makes It Worse
Patients at our KR Puram clinic are often genuinely confused: "Doctor, I'm tanning badly, but Bangalore isn't even that hot?" It's a fair question — and the answer surprises almost everyone.
The Altitude Effect Nobody Talks About
Bangalore sits at nearly 900 metres above sea level. Less atmosphere between you and the sun means less UV filtering — so UV exposure here is meaningfully stronger than the pleasant 27°C air temperature suggests. Your skin is reading the UV index, not the thermometer. This is why people tan faster in Bangalore than in far hotter coastal cities.
The Daily Damage Stack
- Two-wheeler commutes: An open-face helmet ride through KR Puram or ORR traffic is a daily UV session on exactly the areas — cheeks, forehead, forearms — where we see the most pigmentation.
- Construction and road dust: Ongoing metro and road work across East Bangalore deposits particulate matter that drives inflammation, and inflamed Indian skin pigments readily.
- The AC cycle: Office AC dehydrates skin; dehydrated skin has a weaker barrier; a weaker barrier inflames and pigments faster. Repeat five days a week.
What Actually Works
- Broad-spectrum SPF 50+, reapplied every 3 hours if you're commuting. This is 70% of the battle — no treatment holds without it.
- Vitamin C or tranexamic acid serum for existing tan and early pigmentation — both are well-tolerated by Indian skin.
- Chemical peels in-clinic for stubborn tan and uneven tone — controlled, dermatologist-graded exfoliation that home scrubs can't replicate safely.
- Q-switch laser for deeper, resistant pigmentation and melasma — it breaks pigment clusters that creams can't reach.
De-Tan Facials vs Actual Treatment — Know the Difference
A de-tan facial gives a temporary glow by removing the most superficial tanned layer. It does not treat melasma, root-cause sun damage, or deep pigmentation — those need medical treatment. Both have their place; just know which one you're paying for. If a dark patch has been stable or growing for months, skip the parlour and get it examined — some pigmentation needs diagnosis before anything touches it.
